Publicación Acceso abierto A simple regionalization approach as an alternative to obtain rainfall data in a tropical and ungauged catchment(Universidad del Valle, 2016-01-19) Alvis, José F.; Martínez Cano, Carlos; Galvis, Alberto(Eng) The availability of rainfall information with high spatial resolution is of fundamental importance in many applications in the field of water resources. Commonly, the rainfall data in developing countries are obtained by rain gauge stations. However, many studies show that traditional measures based on rain gauge stations may not reflect the spatial variation of rainfall effectively. Although satellite data have been widely used around the world, when applied to local regions the spatial resolution of these products is too coarse. In this paper, an approach to identify a downscaling method through geostatistical regionalization to improve water resources models with short spatial and temporal scales and with limited rainfall data is presented. Three different models were applied: Cokriging, Inverse Distance Weight (IDW) and Kriging. Statistical parameters such as mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) were computed. A cross-validation process showed a better fit for most of the stations using the Cokriging method. The regionalization results were quite comparable with the rain gauge stations data. Although the model outcomes did not improve remarkably, the contribution of this approach may have the potential to provide useful rainfall data at spatial scales shorter than the present resolution. Introduction: It is important to study the smoking habit epidemiology in those of humans, which are in the process of academic formation. Those groups will be in the future agents of change in our community and in the case of people involved in the health areas; they are going to deal with risk factors related to chronic diseases. In 2004, the same questionnaire of other study carried out in 2003 was applied in students of programs operating during the day time and enrolled in the first semester, the questionnaire was done during the second half of the year; the purpose was to know the characteristics of the smoking habit in this population and to have a data base for future studies. Methods: This transversal study was done by applying a self responded questionnaire addressed to students of the day time journey and enrolled in the first semester from August to November of 2004. Results: The questionnaire was fulfilled by 1186 (89.6 %) out of 1324 students with criteria to be included in the study. A proportion of 23.2% of students were classified as smokers, with sporadic or habitual habit, and 4.4% of students were classified in the group of ex-smokers. There was a significant difference between males (34.2%) and females (18.2%). According to the group of age, those younger than 17 years old had the lowest proportion of smokers. Despite of non significant differences, the group older than 22 years old had the highest proportion of smokers. Comparing between academic programs, those students from social areas different to health had the highest rate of prevalence. Those students enrolled in programs related to the human airways had the lowest prevalence. Discussion: The prevalence of smokers in this group of study is similar to the rate reported in the general population and studies developed in university students. A bias of no response was confirmed in the study of 2003. Those students from academic programs related to the respiratory airways had lower rates of smokers, and this should be confirmed in other studies. Introduction: The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence and characteristics of the smoking habit in the people of the USC, including teachers, administrative staff and students enrolled in the first semester of the year 2003. Methods: This transversal study was developed in the USC at the Pampalinda campus and included a self responded questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to classify the group in non smokers or smokers, which could be habitual or sporadic smokers. Results: The questionnaire was fulfilled by 1998 (73.8 %) out of 2705 people with criteria to be included in our study. There was a group of 14.8 % smokers and 13% of ex smokers. A significant statistical difference was found comparing the habit between men and women (23.8 vs. 8.3% respectively) (OR=2.14, IC: 1.67-2.73). According with age, those younger than 17 years old had the lowest prevalence, overall in the group of health students. The highest proportion of smokers was found in the group of 30-34 years old. The administrative staff and the group of teachers from no health schools had a higher proportion than the rest of our population studied. This group of teachers had the highest proportion of habitual smokers, with a significant statistical difference (11.2% vs. 3.2%) (OR=3.73 IC: 1.84-7.66). Discussion: This research shows lower prevalences from other studies developed in the same region. By age, sex and study groups the prevalence was lower; it could suggest a bias of no answer.
