Publicación Acceso abierto Assessment of the influence of Escherichia coli on the immature stages of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in Girardot, Colombia.(Universidad del Valle, 2017-06-30) Garay Gutiérrez, Lina Marcela; Pinilla Agudelo, Gabriel; García Sánchez, Diana Carolina; Quintero Espinosa, Juliana; Sociedad Colombiana de Entomología - Socolen; Universidad del ValleBacterial populations are common in water, especially in ponds and sewage in urban and rural areas.Their abundance seems to affect the presence of some immature aquatic insects. This study aimed to establish the relationship between immature Aedes aegypti states and the presence of Escherichia coli in drinking water reservoirs in the city of Girardot, Colombia. Therefore, a random sampling of 30 water containers in different houses, half of them with the presence of different quantities of immature Ae. aegypti, was made. In all cases, samples were taken in order to make direct counts of E. coli in 3MTM PetrifilmTM Aqua. Nonparametric statistical tests were performed to determine differences and to correlate bacterial populations and vectors. It was found that there is a significant relationship between the number of CFU ml-1 of E. coli and the abundance of immature Ae. aegypti. It was established that there were differences in bacterial abundances between deposits with low, moderate, and high amounts of immature mosquitoes. It was verified that the increase in the number of larvae and pupae of the vector was higher as water samples had higher amounts of E. coli. Publicación Acceso abierto First record of Uranotaenia cooki (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Dominican Republic.(Universidad del Valle, 2018-07-08) Rodríguez Sosa, María Altagracia; Vásquez Bautista, Yohan Enmanuel; Fimia Duarte, Rigoberto; Guerrero, Kelvin Antonio; Alarcón Elbal, Pedro María; Sociedad Colombiana de Entomología - Socolen; Universidad del Valle; Montoya Lerma, JamesThis study reports the species Uranotaenia cooki (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Dominican Republic for the first time, specifically in the municipality of Jarabacoa. With this finding, the culicid is officially present in all the countries that make up the Greater Antilles. Among mosquitoes collected at a rural locality from Yolombó, Antioquia, the following species were found: Anopheles neomaculipalpus, An. nuñeztovari complex, Aedes serratus, Coquillettidia venezuelensis, Cq. hermanoi, Cq. albicosta and Psorophora ciliata. The last three species are reported for the first time in the departament (state) of Antioquia, Colombia, South America.Publicación Acceso abierto Temperature effect on the phenotypic expression of characters of costal spots Nyssorhynchus triannulatus (Diptera: Culicidae: Anophelinae).(Universidad del Valle, 2021-03-03) González Obando, Ranulfo; Cárdenas Henao, Heiber; Marín Londoño, Omar Alejandro; Sociedad Colombiana de Entomología - Socolen; Universidad del Valle; Montoya Lerma, JamesIn this study, the effect of temperature on the phenotypic expression of size, elongation (length/width) and costal wing spots among families, progenies and sexes was evaluated through traditional morphometry in populations of Nyssorhynchus triannulatus from southern Colombia. In the progenies of 11 families, obtained at 20, 24 and 28 °C the wings showed four costal spots patterns. Pattern I was present in all three breeding temperatures with the highest frequency. Within families, the average length/width of wing ratio was significantly higher in males than females, while the variation by sex of this character was similar. Among the families, the temperature had variable influence on the sizes of wings and costal spots. Within the components of phenotypic variation, the breeding temperature had no significant detectable effect on the length of the wing and several of the analyzed characters; however, the proportion of the subcostal pale spot length over the length of the distal sector dark spot (SCP/DSD) was the most sensitive to temperature changes. The genetic contribution of the wing size and the measured characters length, as well as the effect of the families (origin) on the phenotypic variation, was significant for almost all the characters analyzed. The effect of the sexes on the phenotypic variation of the studied characters was significant only for some characters, while there were few significant interactions between the three factors analyzed (temperature, family and sex) with a low effect on the phenotypic variation.
