This thesis will analyze the psychological changes of the characters as they are devoured by the wilderness and the vastness of the desert, and how the travelers¿ decision to embrace the wilderness ultimately leads them to be freed of their ego, but also condemns them to realize that they are left alone in a new culture that does not want them or accept them. Port¿s abandonment of his Western ego results from his distaste with the current Western society, the stain left by war, and the false ideals and masks of intellectualism. An unpublished writer, Port embraces the idea that in order to write, one must detach oneself from all that is banal. Kit, who embodies the Western culture, tags along with Port on his unusual adventures because she cherishes him and wants to save their marriage, but she quickly finds herself abandoned and surrounded by a strange and violent world. The trip begins with the three arriving in North Africa. Port is a traveler and this place provides the escape from the mechanized era he has longed for. Arriving at the port of Tanger with Kit and their friend, Turner, he soon regrets his decision, but is unwilling to admit this since it was his idea to go to Africa in the first place. As they advance deeper into the wilderness, the characters find themselves consumed by their rejection of the Western ego, while at the same time they suffer from the rejection by this new civilization they are so eager to embrace.The relationship between the characters, Kit ¿s love for Port and their discontentment with the presence of Turner, will be studied from a psychoanalytical perspective, as the novel is filled with the inner monologues of the characters and their impressions of their companions. It will focus on how their interactions lead them to slowly reshape, lose, or abandon their idea of Western ego and how their travels deep into the wilderness affect them. The Moresby couple, Kit and Port, are the main characters of the novel, with Turner being more of embodiment of the Western world Port is trying to flee. Both of them represent a different angle on the loss of the Western ego and the harshness of abandoning the only culture to which they belong. The essay will explore their motivations for rejecting conventional American values. For Port, this involves an avoidance of emotional responsibilities and a fascination for the unknown, as represented by the desert and the sky. Kit, on the other hand, attempts to deny the disintegration and destruction of her Western ego, fearing consumption of her own sense of self. The novel ¿s three chapters are connected to the evolution of the characters as they move further away from the Western culture they despise while at the same time gradually losing their own selves. This thesis will explore the tragic consequences this entails. Its methods will derive from New Criticism and Psychoanalytic Criticism. Both approaches focus on the the construction and development of the core theme, examining the psyche of the characters and their interactions with one another and with the environment.

Este ensayo literario explora la construcción, transformación y relaciones de los cinco personaje principales en la primera novela de Carson McCullers, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, publicada en 1940. Mick Kelly, Biff Brannon, Benedict Mady Copeland y Jake Blount, residentes de un pueblo del sur de los Estados Unidos conocen a John Singer, un hombre mudo que trabaja grabando plata, quien se convierte en su objeto de amor y el eje alrededor del cual giran sus vidas hasta que se suicida. La relación que se desarrolla entre los personajes y Singer les permite explorar sus sentimientos, pensamientos y planes. El hecho de que él les de la bienvenida incondicionalmente y nunca los critique o contradiga, les da el valor para llevar a cabo alguno de los planes que han estado posponiendo debido a su soledad y dificultad para comunicarse con los demás. A través de sus conversaciones con Singer, los otros cuatro personajes reafirman su personalidad y se aceptan como personajes incompletos que cambian constantemente.

El presente trabajo es un intento de analizar la obra El Exorcista del escritor norteamericano William Peter Blatty teniendo en cuenta dos conceptos. Por un lado, es una obra que se configura como horror, algunos la llamaran horror cósmico por sus elementos sobrenaturales ateniéndose a la taxonomía propuesta por H. P. Lovecraft. El segundo concepto, es el de sublimidad desde los postulados de Edmund Burke, para quien lo sublime es un placer deleitoso que se siente cuando el cuerpo está cercano a la idea de muerte. Ambos conceptos, uno desde la filosofía estética, el otro desde la literatura se encuentra para configurar un marco desde la creación literaria y otro desde el placer. Lo anterior invita a pensar la literatura y otras disciplinas como pequeños afluentes que se encuentran en el gran río del conocimiento por el cual todos alguna vez, como Fausto, nos sentimos seducidos. Sin embargo, entre las fronteras de lo humano y lo sobrenatural, muchas veces escogemos la fe.

This analysis corresponds to an analytical and interpretative essay on the negation of the other in the novel Sula (1973) by Toni Morrison, one of the most important African American writers. In Sula, the author explores the concepts of good and evil as she provides characteristics of the African American culture and black identity. The characters‘ main struggle is their quest for achieving an authentic identity within this sexist and racist society that constricts their lives and dreams with moral standards. This essay attempts to demonstrate through this novel how human beings find self-destruction by attempting to destroy others, those who have different views of life and the world. The analysis focuses on the most important aspects of life proposed in this book: self-awareness, identity, friendship, traveling, the community, and heritage, which condition one‘s vision towards the other and nurture, at the same time, one‘s whole identity. As a major conclusion, there is no success for a society that judges and isolates the individuals who want to become authentic and attempt to break the constrictions of moral prejudices. For each member of the community is essential in the balance of it.

Este trabajo hace un análisis literario desde un enfoque sociológico de la novela "Native son" del autor estadounidense Richard Wright. Explora temas de identidad étnica, conflictos sociales, discriminación; así como la violencia a causa de los prejuicios y el racismo. El trabajo examina tres aspectos de la obra, desde la masculinidad y la homosocialidad en la construcción de la identidad; el determinismo como detonante de violencia; y la violencia como mecanismo de expresión de identidad. Finalmente se concluye con la tesis del autor quien afirma que los diferentes factores sociales afectan al personaje principal en su construcción de identidad y accionar violento en la obra.
