Se presenta una investigación de tipo cuantitativo realizada en 1998 a través de una encuesta individual en personas mayores de 60 años en Manizales, Colombia, con el fin de caracterizar la atención en salud. Se identificó la cobertura, el uso y conocimiento de los servicios de promoción y prevención, diagnóstico, tratamiento y rehabilitación, el sexo y la edad. El proceso de muestreo se hizo a través de rutas aleatorias con representatividad al nivel de estratos y comunas. Los resultados muestran que el conocimiento de los servicios disponibles es mayor en las personas con edades entre 60 y 64 años; sin embargo, estos servicios son más utilizados por los mayores de 75 años. Es muy baja la demanda de actividades en salud por los mayores de 60 años que están afiliados a los regímenes contributivo, subsidiado y por los vinculados; se puede pensar que existe una oferta limitada de servicios y poca difusión, o los mayores no han tomado conciencia de la importancia del autocuidado. The results show that knowledge about the available services, is greater for persons between 60 and 64 years old; nevertheless, these services are more used by people over 75 years old. The demand for health activities is very low from people over 60, who are affiliated to the contributive, subsidized regimes. It can be sought that there is a limited offer of services, and little propaganda, or that the older have not become aware of the self-care importance.
