Abstract The Cali river basin is part of the eastern side of the Colombian Western Range of the South American Andes, which has been the result of different geological events that have happened on Earth since its formation, continually changing its height and shape over millions of years due to compression between the South America and the Nazca tectonic plates. Here, the lithosphere and the environment have been in continuous co-evolution, forging ecosystems peculiar to each region. Therefore the geological, environmental and biological history of the Cali River basin has been dynamic, and the environmental goods and services are continuously evolving in terms of both the physical phenomena of the earth, which determine variables such as the height of the mountains, the geomorphology of the basin, and in terms of anthropogenic variables. Initially, when the colonization of the Cali River Basin started, and for some centuries later, the goods and services offered by the basin were sufficient for the amount of existing population, so then no need of control could be foreseen, let alone plan and restrict. But as the population in the territory increased, emerging communities found the possibility of economic subsistence in the forested hillside areas, either by exploitation of forests for wood and wood products, or by producing energy sources such as firewood and charcoal, or, as in the present times, by its use as a rest and recreation area. This brought also changes in land rights, the need to open new frontiers for the production of agricultural food crops, and access to animal protein and animal products, either as meat or as derivatives such as leather to make coats, leather ropes and other gear needed for husbandry. During this process some ecosystems remained intact, while others were operated by the society in its progression and colonization of the basin, changing the landscape, changing the supply of services, changing the possibility of their being further inhabited and of course changing the hydrological patterns - and the water available. This article will show through a tour the structure of settlement and the formation in time and space of the dynamic habitats of different communities settled in the territory of the Cali River basin.
